"This Is Scouting" On-Line Training Replaces
New Leader Essentials as a Required Training

"This is Scouting" was added to the BSA's on-line Learning Center over the weekend. "This is Scouting" replaces New Leader Essentials as a required course for Cub Scout, Boy Scout, and Venturing volunteers to earn the "Trained" leader emblem.

....MORE

Westark Area Council and its Districts will eliminate the New Leader Essentials segment from their training calendars and add a link to http://MySouting.org so that Scouters can complete this on-line course.
While the primary delivery method for "This is Scouting" is on-line, a DVD, No. 36118, will be available after April 1, from Supply for areas where internet access is limited or where group presentation is desired.
All Scouters are encouraged to create a MyScouting account and access this training through the MyScouting portal, as credit for this training will be recorded on their PAS record upon completion.  It can be found under E-Learning>General tab>Basic Training.
(Editor's Note:  I just went through it and found it full of interesting video, scouting history, and a great overview of the program --- and I have been at this a few years!  Give it a look, even if you have already earned your Trained strip.  It will make you feel all warm and fuzzy and remind you why you do what you do.  It took about 45 minutes and you can pause it if you need to.)

Changes to Annual Health
and Medical Record

The Class 1, 2 and 3 medical form has been replaced with the Annual Health and Medical Record.  This form is for everyone.  There is no longer a difference in the exam interval based on age.

The Major Changes
A health history is still sufficient for typical activities lasting less than 72 hours (Parts A and C of the new form-similar to the old Class 1 form). For activities lasting longer than 72 hours, a medical evaluation by a health-care provider is now required annually (Part B). For high-adventure activities for which medical care may be delayed, restrictions based on standardized height/weight ratios are now mandatory.

When to start using
the new form

Everyone should begin using the Annual Health and Medical Record immediately. An existing Class 3 form can continue to be used until it expires in 2009. The only supported form effective January 1, 2010, is the Annual Health and Medical Record. Its use will be mandatory for 2009 Camp Orr Summer Camp and the 2010 National Scout Jamboree.

There are three parts
to the Annual Health and Medical Record

All participants should fill out Parts A and C for any event. Part B (the physical examination) should be completed if you are participating in an event that exceeds 72 consecutive hours, such as jamborees, summer camps, and Wood Badge training courses. Part B also is required for participation in a resident camp setting or when the nature of the activity is strenuous and demanding such as service projects, work weekends, or high-adventure treks. It is important to note that if the event will take your unit beyond a radius wherein emergency care is more than 30 minutes by ground transportation, the height/weight chart found at the bottom of Part B should be strictly followed.

This form will need to be updated annually.
