Scholarships Are Available!
There are a number of $75 Scholarships for National Leadership Youth Training for Boy Scouts that have just now become available which will pay almost one-half of the NYLT summer camping fee.

Scholarships are to help Scouts attend NYLT who might need financial assistance.  Scoutmasters are asked to send Mary Fisher an email at mfisher@arkwest.com if they have a Scout who is interested in attending NYLT this summer and she will be in touch with them within a few days.

NYLT is certainly one of the best programs available to teach Scouts how to become leaders in their Troops.  This is as close as it gets to Wood Badge for boys.  Don't let your potential young leaders miss out!

Are you Ready for the Challenge?

About the Course
National Youth Leadership Training is an exciting,
action-packed program that provides Boy Scouts and Venture
Crew members with leadership skills and experience they can
use in their home units and in other situations demanding
leadership of self and of others.

NYLT is a six-day training and camping experience, during
which youth from throughout the council are placed in patrols
that are part of a training troop. Content is delivered in a
troop and patrol outdoor setting with an emphasis on
immediate application of learning in a fun environment.

The course is directed by a staff of junior leaders and
instructors who work closely with their adult advisers.
Participants and their patrols get an opportunity to practice
and experience leadership skills firsthand.

Those who have completed NYLT return to their units with a
toolbox of leadership skills that enable them to better
understand their role as someone who can and should shape
the direction of their unit. Each youth returns home knowing
not only how the unit functions, but why it functions as it
does. They are better equipped to communicate with fellow
youth and adults, better equipped to plan and better equipped
to help their unit function as a high-performance unit.

Who Is Eligible
To be eligible, a Scout must be 13, a First Class Scout before
the start of the course, and have his Scoutmaster's
recommendation. Crew members need the recommendation
of their Advisor.

To Register: The cost is $150 before May 15th; $160
after May 15th. The registration form is available at the Scout
Shop or online at WestarkBSA.org by linking off the course

On-Line BSA Supplemental Trainings Touch on Important Topics Including How to Support Scouts With ADHD

Supplemental Training Modules:  http://www.scouting.org/boyscouts/supplemental/

Supplemental training modules are designed to provide orientation beyond the basic training offered in New Leader Essentials and leader-specific training. Each module is a unit of training that can be used as an outline for a group, for personal coaching, or for self-study. Most of the outlines should require about an hour to complete. Consider each unit of study to be an introduction to the subject. Scouters are welcome to download subjects that are of interest for personal or unit use. There are no training credits associated with the completion of these units of study. Additional training units are being developed and will be continually added to this site.

Orientation for New Boy Scout Parents
This brief orientation is designed to draw new parents into the troop experience and give them the information they need to enjoy the program and help their sons succeed.

Selecting Quality Leaders
This session will provide an overview of the seven steps to recruiting a key adult unit leader and will prepare participants to recruit new leaders for their units’ needs.

Board of Review Training
This module will train troop committee members and others in the purposes of the board of review, offering suggestions for the types of questions that can or should be asked.

Planning and Conducting a Safe Scout Outing
Safe Scouting can happen if you follow the Scout motto—Be Prepared. This unit of supplementary training will describe how to plan for and conduct a safe Scout outing.

Scoutmaster Conference Training
This module will teach Scoutmasters, assistant Scoutmasters, and other troop leaders about the purposes of the Scoutmaster’s conference and will offer suggestions for questions that could be asked at these conferences.

The Order of the Arrow and Your Troop
This session discusses the benefits to the individual, troop, district, and council as a result of the Order of the Arrow’s influence in your troop.

Geocaching to Promote Scouting
Geocaching is an exciting new sport that uses GPS navigation to find hidden treasures. It provides another tool for the fun-with-a-purpose toolbox and can combine outdoor adventure with advancement, recruiting, retention, and public relations.

The BSA places the greatest importance on creating the most secure environment possible for our youth members. All Cub Scout and Boy Scout adult volunteers should take this course. It covers the BSA’s Youth Protection policies, kinds of abuse, signs of abuse, how to respond to disclosure of abuse, and proper reporting procedures. It does so by taking you through situations that require choices and produce consequences. Successful completion of this course requires an 80 percent or higher score.

If you take this test as a registered member of the BSA and designate Westark Area Council, your completion will be reported back to council to adjust your training records. You’ll also be offered a certificate of completion.
